Vitamin C Bomb Smoothie

March 3, 2017

Vitamin C Bomb Smoothie
Is it me or it looks like spring is finally in the air?
The temperatures are still pretty chilly but the forecast says it will start warming up soon and the days are getting longer and lighter, if you know what I mean.
Although the approaching change in season has us rejoicing for the sunshine, warm weather, and blooming flowers that it brings, it also has us bracing for allergies and seasonal colds to flare up.
No matter how much you love spring, colds and allergies are not fun.
Luckily, there are natural ways to fend them off.
Such as charging on Vitamin C, which is considered the "muscle" of the immune system.

Avocado Lime and Basil Smoothie

Avocado Lime and Basil Smoothie

Guys, I think I’m onto something.
Like I know that if you glance at this recipe's ingredient list, it looks like a weird combination of ingredients for a smoothie: Basil? Lime? Avocado?
Wait, what?
But believe me when I say that this is the REAL DEAL.
It’s so smooth, bright, cheery, and refreshing: the perfect antidote to the heat wave we're all experiencing right now.
[On a side note can I just say that I’m so done with this summer. Seriously I’m done. Fall can’t come soon enough. I want to pull out the sweaters, scarves, warm coats, and the fresh smell of hot coffee. Summer begone.]

Superfood Goji Berry Smoothie

Good news people: this smoothie is awesome!
And that’s a fact, whether you like it or not.
It’s ridiculously healthy and tastes delicious. Like there’s no need to talk about it because it’s a total no-brainer.
It fills your belly and helps keep you full. It’s a perfect on-the-go breakfast, snack or even a meal for lunch. Actually, this smoothie is so perfect the time of the day truly doesn’t matter.

Limonada De Coco (Frozen Coconut Limeade)

Limonada de Coco (Frozen Coconut Limeade)

Summer is in full swing and the weather is heating up all around.
For those of you who are already on vacation, good for you, I envy you so much. Because let’s face it, the city is a terrible place to be in the summer.
The hot exhale of garbage trucks, questionable drips from a/c units above your head, mounting piles of garbage simmering in the heat, crowded and smelly subway cars. Should I go on?
And though it’s true that there are a million things to do to make summer more liveable in the summer (free public pools, sprinkles parks, etc.), from July 4th on everyone that has the means to be elsewhere is, while the rest of us is slowly melting on the pavement.

Antioxidant Berry Chia Seed Smoothie

I can see you rolling your eyes. (That's right, I can see you even from here, because I have a super powers!) You're thinking: What? NOT another smoothie! Is he on one of his smoothie marathons or something?
Well, don’t worry. The next recipe will be a NON-smoothie I promise. I just couldn’t resist sharing with you guys what I had for breakfast for the last month, and probably what I’m going to have for lunch for the next two months.
And isn’t it the point of a personal food blog to show you guys the food I’m actually making (and eating)?

Pineapple Coconut Smoothie

Pineapple Coconut Smoothie

It’s been a long while since I have posted a smoothie recipe here.
Too long, five months to be precise.
And I don’t want you to get the impression that I don’t care for smoothies anymore.
I still love smoothies and I make one nearly every day, even in this freezing cold February.
February, a month that I find rather difficult to fully embrace.
I don’t know if it’s because it has an inconsistent number of days. Normally, there are 28 days (already annoying), but then there's the leap year rule where an extra day is added every four years, so 29. Confusing.
February is also the last full month of winter, but it can be just as cold as January. Maybe even more so.
It teases us with warm days here and there and a little hope enters our hearts, but cold spells are still in the forecast. And when it does, it stings a little harder.

Chia Seed Berry Coconut Smoothie Bowl

Chia Seed Berry Coconut Smoothie Bowl

To some extent, in one way or the other, we are all incoherent. I think it’s part of human nature: we say one thing and end up doing another.
A few everyday examples include: complaining about living in a mess but watching TV instead of doing chores, extolling the health benefits of biking to work then smoking a pack a day, parking the car as close as possible to the gym before going to a cardio class, wearing sports clothes but never exercising, being concerned about your health but eating a diet of junk food, etc. I could go on forever and ever and ever

Immune-Boosting Blueberry Smoothie

Immune-Boosting Blueberry Smoothie

There are many aha moments in September when you can tell summer is over and fall has begun.
The leaves are turning yellow, red and brown, the air chills and the days get shorter, the Instagram feed is filled with snaps of pumpkin spice lattes, your favorite shows are no longer repeats, and a symphony of sniffles on public transportation begins.
Which can only mean one thing: we need to start worrying about colds and the flu (sigh!)

Raspberry Cocoa Smoothie

Raspberry Cocoa Smoothie

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that people have strong opinions about the combination of fruit and chocolate.
I don’t judge, I mean, I have strong opinions about pretty much everything, such as the combination of chocolate and cayenne pepper (sometimes), whitefish salad sandwich (no thanks), pillow fight in Union Square (once is more than enough), and how many rounds of Candy Crush it is acceptable to play back-to-back (non-stop, what kind of question is that?)
What I’m saying here, is that pretty much the only thing I don’t have uncompromising views on is the combo of fruit and chocolate.

Blueberry Avocado and Spinach Power Smoothie

Blueberry Avocado and Spinach Power Smoothie

Hi, my name is Mike and I’m an addict.
No, this post is not about chocolate or cauliflower as you might assume, it’s about avocado.
What is it about this green fruit that makes me go crazy?
From salads, to hummus, pesto, brownies, mayo, scrambled eggs, ice-cream, pudding, fries, even cream sauce. I put avocado in and on everything.
Actually, I love avocado so much I might write a song about it (if I only knew how to write music). It’s a love affair that runs deep.

Mango Spinach Chia Smoothie

Mango Spinach Chia Smoothie

One of the things I can tell you about me is that I'm clearly not a morning person.
I've got a friend who's a badass morning person. As soon as he opens his eyes he’s like BING! Awake and ready to go.
I’m not like that, at all.
It’s not laziness. Some people just work on a different cycle. I don't like waking up, I don’t like mornings. That’s it.
Even when I wake up at 6am to go for a morning run: my legs might be moving, but I’m still dozing off.

Cranberry Green Tea Smoothie

Cranberry Green Tea Smoothie

Can anyone please help me identify what is that yellowish blob in that Tupperware container sitting in the back of my freezer?
Is it soup? Sorbet? Mashed potatoes maybe?
Who knows, who knows…
And what about those depressing looking freezer-burned veggie burgers. How long have they been lurking there? Months, years, decades?
Maybe I shouldn’t have started cleaning out my freezer, it was not a great idea after all.
These encounters are starting to get scary.

Raspberry-Grapefruit Smoothie

Raspberry-Grapefruit Smoothie

Another day another smoothie. I’m sorry guys, but I can’t help myself. I’m in the mood for smoothies so that’s what you’re getting.
I’ve made this raspberry-grapefruit smoothie several times and it’s delicious. Fresh, healthy, and well, grapefruit-y.
It’s so good, I had to share it with you.

Green Detox Smoothie

Green Detox Smoothie

I’m alive, I’m alive!
I know you guys were super worried — OK, maybe not “super worried”, let’s go with concerned? Puzzled? Curious? You have to give me curious at least.
Anyways, I’m here in one piece, still alive, typing on the keyboard, with my cup of green tea.
Life seems to be going back to normal, finally.
So what happened?
Well, nothing that exciting.
In a nutshell, when I got back from the holidays on January 4th I got the flu. Just like that.
I’m not complaining, it’s flu season, people get the flu.
However, I didn’t get the flu, I got the super flu, the terminator of flu.

Very Cherry Recovery Smoothie

Very Cherry Recovery Smoothie

If you’re a runner, a triathlete, a cross-fitter or just a gym-goer, you know there’s no shortage of new supplements and other products that claim to promote faster recovery.
Most of us have learned to ignore them, we just don’t believe it.
Speed of recovery is subjective and hard to measure. On top of that, the evidence is often pretty weak and even when it’s there, I tend to be skeptical.
Plus, supplements have weird/funny names. Few have catchy ones, but some are…well questionable at best.
Have you ever heard of “Green Bulge”? It’s a supplement for enhancing strength and performance. I’m dead serious, it exists.
Now, don’t get me wrong, it could very well be a good product, but the first time I saw it, I thought it was an arousal supplement for the Hulk.
What about those Boost-Punch-Burn-KaBoom-XXXL supplements? If we were to judge a book by its cover/name, I would say that those are the kind of product with side effects that would include growing a few limbs, glowing skin or turning you into a mutant.
Supplements are expensive too. 50 bucks for a tub of chemical stuff? No thanks.

Minty-Chia Green Smoothie

Minty-Chia Green Smoothie

It’s no secret that I’m a smoothie aficionado.
There’s something about sipping liquid food that just does it for me.
Not that I disdain chewing.
To the contrary, I for one think that jaw activity is totally underrated.
Chewing thoroughly pre-digests food, helps you eat less, and - more importantly - makes you really savor all the flavors your food has to offer.
Chew-chew-chew, for it’s the thing to do!” the crowd screams.
There are times however when contracting the jaw muscles feels like a chore.
Say you go for a 13.1-mile run, come home starving, barely make it to shower, stomach seized up; munching is not an option.
That’s when food in liquid form (aka smoothie) saves the day.
The blender will “gnaw” the food for you and ease the burden on your mouth and digestive system.
All you’re left to do is “Sip-sip-sip!

Warm Apple Pie Smoothie

December 19, 2013

Warm Apple Pie Smoothie
In the summer I easily get excited about cooling drinks such as smoothies or juices. But in the winter - especially when it’s snowing outside - I crave hot drinks that will warm me up from the inside out.
However, I find it hard to come up with anything more than a cup of coffee, tea or cocoa. I mean, you can call them Mochas, Lattes or Macchiatos...it’s still coffee with some add-ons.
Don’t get me wrong, coffee (or tea) is awesome, but sometimes it’s nice to mix things up a little.
And I’m not talking about getting your booze on.
In that case there’s a variety of hot drinks to choose from: Hot spiced wine, eggnog with a dash of brandy or hot buttered rum. But as much as the idea of getting wasted in the morning is tempting, that’s not really how I roll.
So...back to square one?
No, not that fast.
How about a warm smoothie?
Don’t turn up your nose just yet; not before you’ve heard it all.

Almond Chia Recovery Smoothie

Almond Chia Recovery Smoothie

This is hands down my new favorite post-workout smoothie.
I recently found the recipe flipping through the pages of Triathlete Magazine.
Just by looking at the ingredient list I knew that this was a total winner. Almond butter, almond milk and banana: Are you kidding me?
I slightly tweaked the recipe and included chia seeds and vegan protein powder. Even more awesome.
This delicious smoothie is perfect post-workout as it’s packed with protein for muscle repair, carbs for glycogen replacement, and essential fats. And it has a great cooling effect on your body too.
After an intense workout our body needs recovery fuel, but as the blood has been diverted from the digestive system to the muscles, digestion can be difficult and food almost unappetizing.
That’s why liquid meals are better tolerated.

Blueberry Pre-Workout Smoothie

Blueberry Pre-Workout Smoothie

Smoothies are an ideal snack pre-workout as they are a cinch to make, portable, easy to digest and deliver the necessary nutrients to your muscles quickly. They also allow the time between eating and working out to be shortened, a lot.

Carrot Orange Protein Smoothie

Carrot Orange Protein Smoothie

This is the quintessential summer smoothie. It's supercharged with vitamins A and ß-carotene (which converts into vitamin A in the body). As you probably already, know Vitamin A is not only essential for vision, it's THE nutrient for maintaining a healthy skin.
Carrot juice, orange juice and peaches. Three incredible sources of Vitamin A. What do you want more?
