12 Chia Seed Recipes

Chia seeds have gotten a lot of hype this past few years as the new superfood — a long way from chia seed pet that you water and puffs up into some grass poodle.
I don’t think it’s a fad to go away though; because I don’t think it’s a fad anymore.
Actually I would go as far as saying they’re mainstream now, or at least on the way of becoming mainstream.
Chia is a species of flowering plant in the mint family native to central and southern Mexico and Guatemala.
The seeds are a great source of omega 3, helpful in reducing blood pressure, contain a good amount of fiber, protein, and calcium, and can assist in getting you “full” faster.
When combined with water chia seeds form a thick gel. If you add add a tablespoon of seeds to one cup water after just 15 minutes they form a thick jelly-like mass.
It has been said that each seed absorbs water nine to ten times its weight.
As a result, chia seeds are ideal for thickening beverages and creating puddings and mousses. They’re also great in baking goods.

Personally I love making chia puddings for breakfast. I make ‘em the night before and I have them waiting for me in the fridge the next morning.
If you haven’t jumped on the chia seed bandwagon yet, you should do it, now. Here are 12 recipes to get you started…

  6. Yum. These look great! I'm obsessed with chia as a breakfast pudding. I just made a peppermint chocolate one that I am loving. I actually love them warmed up with a bit of cashew milk...just like the malt-o-meal I used to have as a kid.
