Watermelon-Lime Agua Fresca

June 15, 2015

Watermelon-Lime Agua Fresca

Every time I buy watermelon I face the same dilemma: spending less money to buy too much watermelon (a huge seeded one), or spending more money to buy less watermelon (a small seedless one, or cut up in chunks).
But I always end up buying too much watermelon - I could never say to  good bargain.
Since I never want it to go to waste, I make lots of Watermelon-Lime Agua fresca.

Mango Spinach Chia Smoothie

Mango Spinach Chia Smoothie

One of the things I can tell you about me is that I'm clearly not a morning person.
I've got a friend who's a badass morning person. As soon as he opens his eyes he’s like BING! Awake and ready to go.
I’m not like that, at all.
It’s not laziness. Some people just work on a different cycle. I don't like waking up, I don’t like mornings. That’s it.
Even when I wake up at 6am to go for a morning run: my legs might be moving, but I’m still dozing off.

Cranberry Green Tea Smoothie

Can anyone please help me identify what is that yellowish blob in that Tupperware container sitting in the back of my freezer?
Is it soup? Sorbet? Mashed potatoes maybe?
Who knows, who knows…
And what about those depressing looking freezer-burned veggie burgers. How long have they been lurking there? Months, years, decades?
Maybe I shouldn’t have started cleaning out my freezer, it was not a great idea after all.
These encounters are starting to get scary.

Raspberry-Grapefruit Smoothie

Raspberry-Grapefruit Smoothie

Another day another smoothie. I’m sorry guys, but I can’t help myself. I’m in the mood for smoothies so that’s what you’re getting.
I’ve made this raspberry-grapefruit smoothie several times and it’s delicious. Fresh, healthy, and well, grapefruit-y.
It’s so good, I had to share it with you.

The Easiest Way To Make Pomegranate Juice

February 27, 2014

Pomegranate Juice

OK, maybe the easiest way to make pomegranate juice is going to the store and buy some, I’ll concede that.
But oh, it is pricey. A little 16 ounces bottle goes for over $4, easily. That’s a LOT of money.
So if you find pomegranates when they’re in season (and maybe on sale), you can make your own juice at a reasonable cost. It’s easy, quick and tastes so much better than store bought —
you have no idea how much better it actually tastes.

Exercising While Sick + Honey, Lemon & Ginger Tea

December 10, 2013

Honey, Lemon & Ginger Tea

Today I woke up with a terrible sore throat and stuffy nose.
The savvy thing to do would have been to make some tea and curl back up into my bed. But no,
I headed out the door in hopes that running in the freezing cold would reinvigorate me and cure all.
About two miles in, I felt like I was moving slower than a sloth and could not breathe for the life of me.
I contemplated heading back to the house, but hey, am I or am I not a triathlete? Nothing can stop me, right?
So I convinced myself to keep running. Worst.Decisions.Ever.
After one mile I had to stop and walk back home. Fail.
My lungs were burning, my throat felt like sandpaper and I was feeling like the biggest IDIOT in town.
I arrived home light headed but at least the agony was over. I brewed me some honey, lemon and ginger tea (recipe below) and went back to bed. Which is where I should have stayed all along.
Considering that cold (and flu) season is in full swing - and the poor judgement on my part this morning - I thought it would be a good idea to discuss whether it’s to OK to exercise while sick.

Lemon Mint Sparkling Iced Tea

July 18, 2013

When a scorching heat wave descends upon us (such as the one we’re currently experiencing in the NE) the rule of thumb is to try to stay cool, hydrated and indoors as much as possible. And, most of all, to use your common sense. Which apparently I’m lacking. A friend just made me realize that.
Yes, because notwithstanding the heat advisory, on Tuesday I went for a long run outdoors at noon and yesterday I took a Bikram yoga class.
Not so much of a great idea for someone who suffers the heat. Both times I nearly passed out, and it took me almost 5 hours to recover properly. But then again, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. I’m still here in one piece. I must have got some part right (not sure which one though).
To be honest, I don’t think that’s the end of the story. Today (which is supposed to be the hottest day of this heat wave) I’m pretty sure my common sense will trick me into try to do something even more stupid (maybe stretch on the asphalt concrete?). Because hey, third time’s the charm.

Blueberry Pre-Workout Smoothie

Blueberry Pre-Workout Smoothie

Smoothies are an ideal snack pre-workout as they are a cinch to make, portable, easy to digest and deliver the necessary nutrients to your muscles quickly. They also allow the time between eating and working out to be shortened, a lot.

Mixed Berry Protein Smoothie

Warmer months are all about smoothies. At least for me. I gorge myself on them throughout the day. First one in the morning and at least another one in the afternoon when I’m done with training.
Usually with breakfast I prefer the all-fruit ones. It goes without saying it, I always (always, always) add at least one scoop of protein powder.

Green Protein Smoothie

Green Protein Smoothie
This is my favorite green smoothie recipe. I’ve tried several flavors combinations over the years and found this to be pretty awesome. It’s basically banana, spinach or kale, pineapple juice and vanilla protein blended together. The greens slight bitterness almost disappears in the mixture, but still gives a bit of flavor-kick that blends well with the sweetness of the other ingredients.
I like to add chia seeds and bee pollen to make it “complete” from a nutritional standpoint. If you have spirulina add some: this smoothie will get even more awesome!

The Best Green Juice

The Best Green Juice

Green juice is among one the healthiest things you can have: full of antioxidants, vitamins and with a high alkalinity that helps your body balancing the Ph in your system.
However, I need to be honest here: I truly hate green juice. Complete nightmare.
I drink green juice the same way I used to take cod liver oil when I was a little kid: holding my nose, closing my eyes and forcing it it down the throat while telling my body 'this is good for you now gulp it!"
