You’re at the gym, you warmed up and ready to hit the weights. You’re about to grab the 25 pounds dumbbells to exercise your biceps when this dude next to you takes the 50 pounds ones and starts doing biceps curls like he was lifting a bag of feathers.

STOP! This is exactly the kind of thoughts you should never have. In fact, you might never ever need to lift those 50 pounds dumbbells in your lifetime. Why? First of all because there’s no actual need to and, moreover, your body might not just be meant to do it.
It’s crucial to remember that everybody has a distinct body type which is determined by their genetic makeup.
And your ultimate goal should not be of lifting the heaviest dumbbell but to have a well balanced proportionate body: a perfect ratio of height, weight, strength and flexibility.
But, this should be no news to you.
Already back in the year 1487, the one and only Mr. Leonardo da Vinci draw the Vitruvian Man (also called the Canon of Proportions or Proportions of Man); which is a drawing based on the correlations of ideal human proportions with geometry.
- ectomorph: disposed to endurance, longer bone length and slender.
- endomorph: rounder and fuller and more sensitive to weight gain, but with the capacity for short term athletic power.

Ectomorph
A stereotypical ectommorph is a tall lean basketball player lean. They often find it difficult to gain lean muscle mass. Those are the people that at a young age eat lots of food without gaining a pound of fat either. They have the given ability to be active for long periods of time, without getting out of breath.
If you are an ectomorph, it is important that you eat enough and not over-train.
Endomorph
Endomorphic body types are usually rounder, as they tend to store body fat easily. The fat stores tend to go into the hips and thighs for women, and in the abdominal area for men. An extreme example of a endomorph is a Sumo wrestler or football lineman.
If you are an endomorph, you may find it difficult to lose weight.
Mesomorph
A person who is mesomorphic is usually muscular in build and quite athletic. A mesomorph can have more “bad” eating days without it catching up to you. However, you can increase body fat if you don’t exercise regularly. Plus, in order to be really lean, you have to have good eating habits.
There are advantages and disadvantages in all somatotypes. But what matters is to correctly identify what is your body type so that you know where to start from in order to build the IRON YOU!
And that’s when you start thinking: “Damn, I wish I could lift those weight that easily” and then “Man, I have to train as hard as possible so that in few weeks I will also be able to lift 50 pounds as well!”.

I won’t tell you more about this drawing but it does points out how important proportions are. And, even if Mr. Da Vinci’s was saying this just from an aesthetic/geometrical prospective, a proportionate body is more efficient also in term of sport performance.
However, we are all born with different bodies, not only in terms of sex and height but also of so-called “body types”.
There are three distinct body types:
- mesomorph: more predisposed to a naturally lean and muscular frame.- ectomorph: disposed to endurance, longer bone length and slender.
- endomorph: rounder and fuller and more sensitive to weight gain, but with the capacity for short term athletic power.
Most people are a combination of at least two of the types with one type predominant.
Understanding your body type, becomes critical to mapping success.
